Played this for a few hours. The defense is tough. Makes running plays actually worth while and fun. No dunk/cheese fest. No just blindly passing to a cutter and getting an easy two.
If the lane isnt available, its gonna get snatched away. Running plays is sweet. Love it when a plan comes together Some new controls are cool too.
When you call for a pick you can tell the pick to slide toward the rim or pop out. Awesome to use with players like Duncan, Garnett, and Stoudemire that are dangerous anywhere from within 18ft. Is really good, running different plays and feeding their stars accordingly. Tim Duncan tore me up. Catching in his sweet spot and banking it in, or spinning off the post going baseline.
Tony Parker drove in this one time, I dropped off Richardson to help out, Richardson popped out to the 3-pt on the baseline and Tony dished it right to him for the open trey. I was like 'DOH!
I fell for it! Screw you Parker!!!'
Only thing I noticed in my couple hours of playing is that when Duncan was subbed out and McDyess came in, they ran three plays in a row for McDyess. Does computer take into consideration key players being subbed out when chooing what plays to run? Gonna keep my eye out for more of this stuff. The game won't ship with 3D support, but it will be made available as a free download shortly after launch. From my perspective it will be well worth the wait. I just sat here for ten minutes trying to come up with a way to describe to you what I saw, and nothing comes close to doing it justice.
I was struck by how unobtrusive the 3D was; not because the effect was subtle, but because it looked and felt so natural. The added layers of depth made it feel almost as if I was sitting in the stands at a real basketball game and controlling the action on the court. The longer I played, the more I became immersed in the life-like environment.
While the 3D generally played a complimentary role during gameplay, it took center stage during replays. It was really cool to pause the action and zoom the camera around the players - I felt like I was seeing a video game from the future. I even wasted a few minutes lining up the camera just right so that it looked as if an inbounds pass was headed directly for my face. Honestly, I probably could have spent another hour just messing around with the replay camera - it was that much fun. Originally Posted by markc72 Has anyone tried the Move controls yet?

I was skeptical about Move controls in basketball before 2K11 released. Upon actually trying it out I was suprised how natural felt in some cases, but I'm not sold just yet over the normal, full DS3 control. One thing I should point out: as of now there is no support for your off-hand to use the NavCon. 2K said they didn't get the full development kit in time to plug it in, but perhaps they'll ass it in a future patch. That's no problem for me since I'm fine with the one-handed DS3 method in general, but some of you may want to know what's up. Alright, so while I don't yet know each thing you can do with the Move, I was able to do a lot to get a feel for it (I use the 2K camera BTW).
Shooting is done by pointing the Move up to initiate a jumper, and then you pull down to release the ball. This is the best part of the experience since it feels more like you are actually shooting a ball than using the DS3.
Next time for free throws, I'll try and see if you can use this method with the Move going over my head like I would with a real ball, but either way when I play I'll do normal jumpshot motions during the game from my lap. The next thing that felt surprisingly natural was doing defensive slaps at the ball by swinging the Move left or right. I knocked the ball loose a few times with Artest on the ball handler (natch) and took it down the court to score, and turbo is done with the Move's trigger, which makes sense. It really makes sense to swipe left to attack his left hand, and the opposite with his right hand. Aggressive lunging steals are done with a trigger and the steal motion, but if you miss it takes longer to recover. What I'll check for next time is if this stealing motion is absolute or relative to the direction you're facing. If there is a motion contollable pass option, I didn't use it yet since I don't know all the controls.
There are 4-5 ways to pass in the normal DS3 mode, so I may just have missed it. I simply used either L1 icon passing or direct point+Move button passing as I would normally. Here are the parts that didn't feel as fluid.
You control the player with the analog in your left hand, holding L2 for dribble modifiers like with the DS3 alone. The special dribble moves are done with Move flicks and I couldn't connect with the feel of it during the two times I played. L2+flick Move up is one special dribble, with left/right or other dribbles, etc. I may have to go to the gym to really see if I like it.
Also, dunking is satisfying with the Move - you hold turbo as you approach the rim then flick in different directions to initiate a different dunk before flicking back again for the dunk's release. Example, pull up the Move to take off, then quickly push it down to slam it. This feels like you're throwing it down. However I'm not quite sure if you have full access to all of the dunks/layups possible with the Move as you would with DS3. Also, I couldn't figure out how to hook shot.
A lot of the actions with the Move aren't listed even at the official site, so maybe it's all in there. You have access to all of the non-motion controls, since the Move button lets you tap / for the Euro hop step, alternately tap to steal on defense and make coaching decisions with the D-Pad, etc.
With the Move controller and the DS3 combo, the only missing control is the R3 button. I like the feel of shooting and dunking with the Move the most, and stealing to one side or the other so far feels intuitive. But ultimately, if Move feels like it's more trouble than it is worth to get exactly the action I want everytime, or if some significant commands are absent, I'll stick with the full DS3.
I'll keep practicing for awhile to be sure. I wonder if they are keeping the 3D patch separate, deliberately, to try to force people to update their PS3's to a newer firmware? They know that everybody that has a 3DTV will be very, very tempted to update to a newer firmware to get the 3D Blu Ray support, but holding back 3D updates could be another incentive to try to steer people away from getting one of those microcontroller things.
I know it's kinda a crazy conspiracy theory, but you never know, lol. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Gran Turismo and Call of Duty Black Ops do the exact same thing. Boston Celtics 1985-86. Cleveland Cavaliers 1989-90. Atlanta Hawks 1989-90.
Los Angeles Lakers 1990-91. Portland Trail Blazers 1991-92. Detroit Pistons 1989-90. New York Knicks 1994-95.
Seattle Sonics 1995-96. Utah Jazz 1996-97, 1997-98. Tried the move controls. Eh Not much fun when your playing an actual game. The entire time I was just thinking, put this down and play normal. However, I then went to the dunk contest, and Im pretty sure this is what the 2K guys had in mind when they thought 'Lets make this game Move compatible.' Dunk Contest was actually fun with the Move controller.
Trigger to pick the ball up. Then its as simple as a couple flicks or twists of the Move and then trigger to dunk. Will definately give this more time later on. Also, the three point shootout, which I didnt try, should be fun as well with the move. Actual games though, not so much. JORDAN CHALLENGE Being a diehard Laker fan (loving the 2k10 cover!) I wasnt all that excited about Jordan and his challenges ( Dont think I can lead Jordan to defeat the 90 Lakers ) Anyways, I must say Jordan Challenge is f.cking awesome. Not so much for Jordan, but playing against the classic teams and having them play EXACTLY like they did.
Pure awesomeness. Also, its cool that they make you wanna ballhog with Jordan cause scoring 69pts in a damn game is ridiculous. You wont ever be bored trying to do it though I completed the BAD BOYS challenge.
Jordan scored 55pts with 4 assists. I failed the Trailblazers one.

Damn Drexler lit me up. Dunno how Im gonna contain him to under 20pts. I think it would be cool if they can somehow make this a yearly thing. Like next year, instead of Jordan Challenge. Make like Larry Bird, or Magic the cover star and have Bird Challenge or Magic Challenge Every year, a different NBA Legend with their challenges.
I put in two full hours with the Move in a Lakers/Celtic scrimmage (no scoring, not time limits, no fouls). I then tried for five minutes with the full DS3. I have to agree with Wurms that for general play, Move isn't going to cut it. The issue is mainly with doing complex dribble manuevers into pull up jumpers or layups - it requires too much 'exactness' to get it down right as you transition from one gesture to the next. When chaining gestures, you can end up doing the wrong command or see the player simply do nothing because you swiped too early or not fast enough. Going back to buttons and full analog control on the DS3 is an instant increase in fluid playability so I'll stick with only that. I wish they put free throw shooting back into the Sixaxis motion control, because with the Move I still like how that feels if you arc over your head as in real life.

What they did is put up teams that Jordan did something significant against in his career so you relive these moments in 2K11. It has less to do with the relative quality of those teams themselves (although they all were pretty solid):.
Boston Celtics 1985-86 (Jordan scores a league playoff high of 63 points in a double overtime loss). Cleveland Cavaliers 1989-90 (the mid-range jump shot over Ehlo who then slumps over in anguish - Jordan advances in the playoffs. He also scored a career high 69 points against them once in the regular season). Atlanta Hawks 1989-90 (I don't remember anything against this team, but his most memorable 'vs. Hawks' moment to me were the classic slam dunk championship battles he had with Dominique Wilkens during All-Star breaks). Los Angeles Lakers 1990-91 (Jordan wins his first championship against an aging Laker squad who no longer had Kareem or coach Riley. Yeah, I'm still bitter.
Memorable TV clip. Marv Albert yelling, 'A spectacular move by Michael Jordan' as he does an acrobatic hand switch with the ball during a layup). Portland Trail Blazers 1991-92 (The second championship which came against his main SG rival during that era, Clyde 'the Glide' Drexler.
In one game vs. The Blazers, Jordan scores six early treys as if he couldn't miss. He shrugs as if he is also amazed because he wasn't an efficient long range shooter). Detroit Pistons 1989-90 (the main team that kept Jordan from reaching the Finals to that point. I don't know what he did vs.
These guys). New York Knicks 1994-95 (Dominating John Starks, Jordan comes back from early retirement and scores 55 points). Seattle Sonics 1995-96 (my favorite non-Laker team before they became the Thunder, Jordan gets his 4th ring and first since retirement. Crys when he wins because of his recently dead father. Gary Payton IMHO guarded him better in the playoffs than any other player). Utah Jazz 1996-97, 1997-98 (Jordan's 5th and 6th ring against Stockton+Malone.
In one game he becomes dehydrated but still gets the win as he slumps over Pippen who helps him off the court when it's over. The video of his offensive push off on defender Byron Russell to win it all one last time before his second retirement is iconic).
I just noticed. Why don't they have Jordan's opponent for his 3rd ring? The Suns had Charles Barkley, KJ Johnson and Thunder Dan Majerle, which was a very good offensive unit back then.

I really hope 2k sports will do an ultimate version down the road with the all time great teams (there was no super collectors version like the locker version from 2k10?).
Call it the 'Hall of Fame Edition' or something. Wonder if they can add teams/players through DLC? Originally Posted by joeblow I just noticed. Why don't they have Jordan's opponent for his 3rd ring? We are talking about Barkley after all Nothing is free when using that guy's likeness.
Thunder Dan would be epic though! I had a smile on my face today as I was playing the 89-90 Hawks and Spud Webb drove down the lane and jammed on me. Game of Year candidate here folks! Any chance of me getting the 95-96 Lakers?
That is one of my favorite teams ever, mainly because I lived in LA at the time and went to a crapload of games at the Great Western Forum. Nick Van Excel (I have a Van Excel jersey too), Eddie Jones, Ceballos, Elden Campbell, Vlade Divacs, Anthony Peeler, Pig Miller, SEDALE THREATT!!! And dont forget Magic's comback! Here's another fantastic strategy video for you guys to check out. It goes over how to make defensive adjustments from a coaching standpoint.
You can tailor the settings for double teams, going over/under screens, deny entry passes, and allowing players to shoot, all of this in either the post or on the perimeter at each defensive position as you see fit. Interesting how the narrator uses a switch of Pippen on Magic Johnson instead of the default matchup with PG Paxon. That's how Phil Jackson ran the defense in 1991 to disrupt #32's posting up strength and easy passing angles. That's how Phil Jackson ran the defense in 1991 to disrupt #32's posting up strength and easy passing angles. I used the same strategy to limit Dominique's points and keep MJ fresh in the challenge vs the Hawks. Made sure Pippen was always gaurding him and set the double to to always and tight coverage.
That way Dominique would get the ball and be forced to pass almost immediately. He was killing me one on one. I LOVE this game!
It's practically all I've been playing since I got it. I snuck in a game before going to work the other morning which was SO satisfying. It wasn't that close of a game, mind you, it was just VERY realistic in the way it played out. I was San Antonio, at home against New Jersey.
You would think the Spurs would crush them right? Well, I did, like 47-34. And had a great time doing it. I basically just pounded it down low to Duncan almost every trip.
He pwned Lopez and had a field day, shooting 7-8, with a variety of post moves, hooks, face ups, up & unders you name it. He WAS Tim Duncan! And when they started bringing the double-team, Duncan picked up two assists in short order, hitting a cutting Bonner and getting a J from Parker. The Spurs offense hummed like a finely tuned Violin, just laying down sweet hardwood music. The Net hung for a little while (Lopez is beastly in this game), but just didn't have enough firepower, and I won going away. The game was amazing in that I didn't once say, Man, that was too fake or Haaaxxxxx. It was true basketball.
The different personalities of the teams and players was VERY evident, and made it a very satisfying game experience. Manu WAS Manu, Parker WAS Parker.
If you play to a players and a team's strengths, you will do SO much better than some jacka$$ button masher. I love this game. Notes: - Each team had 6 fast break points - Called plays almost every possession, Spurs are a machine!
- Game was played on Pro/Default with Real shot%, Speed at 55 - I shot 60% from the field with the Spurs, Nets shot 42% - I.really. wish 2K would patch the delays during subs and T.O.s, I could have played in 5 minutes less time without those (important when you're grabbing a quick game in the morning!) - I LOVE the post-game highlight reels and press photos! I enjoy going through that stuff nearly as much as playing - The game aint perfect but it's by FAR the best basketball game ever.
